1. ALS is a disease of the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. There is no cure, though there are clinical trials worldwide.
2. ALS affects 30,000 people in the United States at any given time, including many Minnesotans. ALS occurs throughout the world with no obvious racial, ethnic or socioeconomic boundaries.
3. 50 percent of patients live at least two years after diagnosis.
4. Most people who develop ALS are between the ages of 40 and 75, though it can occur at a younger age.
